so another day in school in Germany. fun times, today it was at least. first, me and Björn had German. naturally, a German speaking teacher teaching many German speaking German born students German is going to speak in pretty complicated words, and pretty damn fast too. didn't get much of it, just that there are three rings in a parable that they are reading and that they represent the three major global religions. cool. also, i understand that one is original and the others are duplicates? well of course the original one is Judaism, as Christianity and Islam were based on it...that was hard.
Next came Biology. Again, no idea what was happening, so I'd better not pretend i know. I drew a maze on my graph paper in my notebook. it was kinda awesome.
Religion Studies class, minus a teacher. apparently in Germany, when the teacher is absent, there IS NO TEACHER! cool. we sat around and chatted, (quatschen - best word in German) worked on homework, and in my case, finished my maze. again, cool. doch.
I worked very hard in the next class - Politics, or as the Germans call it, PoWi. No idea what that means, but ok. the teacher gave us a handout with many words on it, and some questions at the bottom, and 15-20 minutes to work on it. cool, cool. i pull out my dictionary. i underestimated how many big words there were. when the time was up, everyone else had read the page and answered the questions. I was still translating the second paragraph, of about 20-25. good times, but it was the longest paragraph. after this, i stood in front of the class and explained Canadian recycling policy, and how Canada as a whole doesn't really have one. got some funny looks from that...
best class (and easiest) of the day, naturally English class. i got to stand in front of the class again, and tell them about me and Canada, everything from our national sports to how it pisses me off when people misuse there, their, and they're. I legit stood up with a piece of chalk and explained this to a classroom of students. good times. I also drew an amazingly detailed map of Canada (which looked suspiciously like a giant oval with a circle called Newfoundland beside it) and showed the class which parts of Canada are registered bilingual. it was amazingly cool. i also learned a new German word, doch, which seems to be both a contradictory and affirmative slang word. not sure how to use it, but it's cool.also learned another word, but i forgot it.
turns out the word 'geil' that i have been using as 'cool' (which is the literal translation...one of them) has several different meanings. geil can be used in two main contexts:
'Das Auto ist geil' - need i translate most of that? that car is cool.
however...
'Du siehst geil aus.' - You look sexy. very different. yay for translation error!
just urban dictionary searched it, and it tells me to not (!) use this in a conversation with anyone but close relatives or friends, as it can be easily misunderstood...
we jsut ate supper. it was 3 in the afternoon. not sure why we did, but we did. beef/pork patties, potatoes (cooked plain), and not quite candied carrots. (good, because i don't like candied carrots...). at 3 in the afternoon. geil. doch.
yesterday at Wing Tsum, we learned takedowns, counter takedowns, and chaining counters. it was pretty cool, but i couldn't get the legtrap right. it was a very small class yesterday, only 6-7 people.
watched the soccer game with the guys (meaning Björn, his brother Erik, his father, and me), watched Germany lose 2-1 to FRANCE. lol. it was pretty funny to see their reactions...that whole 'Germans take soccer very seriously' stereotype...think i gotta support that. yeah.
well, time to go, again.
doch.
tschus!
