it's been a weird last few days. this is gonna be a really long post.
got lost at school on Thursday. For the first blocks, Björn brought me to my class and showed me where it was, only for some unknown reason the lights were out and i had no idea where we were. First couple blocks were ridiculous. Our class is organized in groups of 4 to 6, like in elementary. I sit at a desk at a more or less empty table, all the other tables fill, and the desks all fill, and there is a guy awkwardly standing beside me wanting his seat back. He ended up grabbing an extra desk from the corner, and our group became a group of 7. Then, every single person in the class takes out a computer, plugs them in to the numerous convenient wall plugs, and we did the math class on computers. WHAT THE HELL! they have a file in which you enter the original formula and some derivations, and it gives you the values for the variables and solves it for you. WHAT THE HELL!!! cool, i'm getting that file! next block, English class. first 30 seconds, i made a grave mistake that will haunt me for a very long time: told the teacher i speak good English. he had me explain 6-7 words to the class, simple words like grasp and clod, but still, he was asking me the difference between sow (seeds) and sew (clothing) because he really didn't know. damn my English skills... :p but then in the first block, i followed my class down to the cafeteria to meet with Björn and his friends. he left for the library at the end of the break, and i tried to find my way back to my class. However, all i knew was that i had a class in a classroom. no idea where it was no way to fid it. I go back to the library, try to find Björn,, but he was gone. I ask his friends where to find my class. The dialogue that follows is legit:
Me: I can't find my class.
Them: Which room?
Me: I don't know.
Them: Which teacher?
Me: I don't know.
Them:...which class?
Me: I don't know. You know what, never mind, i have no idea...

I wandered around for a while and eventually found my class, i walked in right behind the teacher. turns out it's my computer science class, with the Java programming. they then spent the entire two blocks designing a program that will add the squared values of every number from 1-64 together, writing some 5 methods, a dozen variables and individual variables for the methods, and many confusing, mistake-riddled return() statements. I wrote the same code in Eclipse in literally 8 lines, with 2 variables. The answer was about 90,000. took me literally 3 minutes to write this code. nobody else got it, but they are all coding in a visual Java program, and are screwing around with the buttons and visuals that looked like crap and were really simple. But alas, i do not have their program yet, so i can't make buttons and visuals. Most of the time my classmates were playing games on their computers. Th teacher didn't care.
following that, i had religion class, easy to find, i was there early. my teacher happened to be Björn's English teacher, who thought it was great that i was in their class because i am a native English speaker. We watched a skit put on by some classmates, the scene where Joseph's elder brothers sold him into slavery. As soon as a guy entered wearing a colorful toga, i knew exactly which passage we were looking at. I happened to have watched the movie. they did a pretty good job. It was great, because we then lit a candle on a tablecloth, and sat in a circle around it eating cake. we played a name game, then we spoke of the passage. I suggested that i bring my Bible to class, as they have no English ones and their Bibles are written in Old German, which makes no damned sense. I only have Religion on Thursdays.
My next block was very interesting. I was confused by the layout of the school, so i spent my 45 minute spare and my 25 minute lunch break exploring the school. I found all 8 stairways and i know where all my classes are, as well as the best route to take. I found the English graffiti in the 'G' stairway, in front of the locked door to the roof. Yes. English graffiti in a German school, in Germany. No German graffiti. i as pleasantly surprised. I met some middle school kids who thought i was British and wouldn't believe my Canadian heritage. it was pretty awesome.
French class, i got there early again, jut before someone else turned up. We chatted for a while about Canada and Germany, and English and German and French and how similar the languages are, but then class began. Again, trouble with desks. I ended up sharing a desk while we studied indirect speech. it was pretty awesome, because despite my 10 years of learning french, i haven't spoken it in over a year, so i don't remember much of it. it's awesome.
Friday. no classes, so i played minecraft all day. yes. i play minecraft.
Today. I am apparently going to a birthday party tonight. No idea for who, but she knows me. sounds like fun. I jut got my first alcohol talk from Björn's mother warning me that probably everything at this party will have alcohol in it and if she hears about me getting blasted, this will be my last party in Germany. awesome! i just got the alcohol, watch your drinking or you're grounded talk! this should be fun...but i still don't know who she is. awesome.
*comment!!!*
James...the fact that you said "I speak good English" has left a terrible dark scar across you as a fellow Canadian. :P You got a drinking alcohol talk? I just told my host mom that I shouldn´t probably be drinking anything. She said to try something is never bad, but don´t be stupid about it. Which is honestly the truth. :) -Suz
